USSU Sweeps Florida National in Home Opener

DAPHNE, Ala. – The United States Sports University baseball team swept the home-opener doubleheader from Florida National on Saturday in the first meeting between the two programs.
 
Game One
Florida National (4-4) struck first with two runs in the opening frame on an RBI double by Christoper Rivera and an RBI single from Noe Davila.
 
USSU (3-1) responded in the bottom of the second. Andrew Garza's leadoff walk and a double by Cory Parker set up the Eagles' first run on an RBI groundout by Chase Jones. Napoleon Colston followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
 
Daniel Howell gave USSU the lead with an RBI single through the right side and Evan Jacob added to the lead with an RBI groundout. Dominick Hartman capped the inning with an RBI single up the middle as the Eagles built a 6-2 advantage.
 
The Conquistadors cut the deficit to 6-3 in the fifth on an RBI single by Davila and added two unearned runs in the sixth to make it a 7-5 game.
 
The Eagles answered in the bottom of the sixth when Jacob singled to score Howell, who had been hit by a pitch and stole second.
 
Hartman and Parker each had two hits to lead USSU's seven-hit effort. Howell reached base three times, scored twice and drove in a run, while Jacob added two RBIs.
 
Giovanny Perez (1-0) earned the win in relief, yielding three runs, one earned, over 3.2 innings. Victor Tyo recorded his first save of the season, striking out three in a scoreless seventh.
 
Jaden Brown started for the Eagles, allowing two runs over 2.1 innings. Braden Parmley (0-1) took the loss for Florida National after surrendering six runs in 2.2 innings.
 
Game Two
The Conquistadors jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first innings, capitalizing on three hits and three walks.
 
USSU responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. Parker singled to begin the rally and Jones reached on an error that brought home two runs. Hayden Jones scored on a wild pitch later to cut the deficit to 6-3.
 
The Eagles added a run in the second on a fielder's choice by Colston and tied the game in the fourth. Parker delivered a two-run single to even the score at 6-6, and a wild pitch later in the inning gave USSU its first lead of the game.
 
USSU added insurance runs in the fifth when Braden Braud tripled and drove in two runs, extending the lead to 9-6.
 
Parker finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Braud went 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs. Chase Jones also drove in a pair of runs.
 
Jakson Stewart (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing two hits over 4.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Cole Philips (1-1) took the loss for Florida National.
