Box Score 2 Daphne, AL - The United States Sports University's softball team got back on winning ways with a doubleheader sweep of John Melvin University on Thursday afternoon in Daphne. The Eagles took game one by a 6-2 margin and completed the sweep with a 9-3 win.
In game one, the Eagles struck first with a run in the first inning, after one out,
Heather Maxwell walked and stole second base and scored on a double by
Sydney Taylor to make it 1-0 after one. The Millers tied it in the top of the second inning but USSU answered with two runs in the bottom half.
Heather Maxwell had a two-run triple scoring
Isabelle Calagaz and
Caitlin Tilton to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. USSU made it 4-1 in the next inning as
Aralee Beene led off with a triple and scored on a Calagaz groundout. Maxwell and
Kayleigh Field added RBI singles to give the Eagles a 6-1 lead.
Ryleigh Merritt picked up the pitching win.
In game two, The Eagles scored seven runs in the first two innings to cruise to the victory. In the first Calagaz provided an RBI single,
Desiree Denmark had an RBI single and Jaci Hager added an RBI double to make it 3-0 USSU after one. Maxwell and
Ahlexus Lackey had RBI singles in the second inning and Denmark added a two-run double to make it 7-0 after two innings of play. Denmark was credited with the pitching win. Denmark went 4 for 4 at the plate and Maxwell was 3 for 3 to lead the 13-hit attack.
The Eagles are back in action this weekend playing in a tournament in Gulf Shores, Alabama, kicking off with a game against Texas A&M at San Antonio on Saturday night at 6:00 P.M.
