USSU Baseball’s Historic Season Ends in DuBois

DUBOIS, Pa. – The United States Sport University baseball team saw its historic season come to an end with a 14-8 loss to Apprentice on Wednesday at the USCAA Small College World Series.
 
The No. 4-seeded Eagles (25-21) came out swinging with five runs in the opening inning. Evan Jacob delivered an RBI double before Dominick Hartman launched a three-run home run to right-center field to give USSU a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, Daniel Howell stole home to push the advantage to 5-0.
 
No. 2-seeded Apprentice (37-6) answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first.
 
USSU scored again in the second when Hartman reached on an error, allowing Jacob to score and extend the lead to 6-3. The Builders cut into the deficit with a run in the bottom half of the inning.
 
Apprentice took control in the third with five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from Isaac McCallister to move in front 9-6.
 
The Builders added a run in the fifth to bolster their lead 10-6. The game was interrupted by a nearly two-hour long lightning delay in the top of the sixth.
 
Apprentice scored four more in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 14-6.
 
The Eagles continued to battle in the seventh. Hayden Jones knocked a two-run triple to trim the deficit to 14-8.
 
Jacob led the Eagles with three hits and two doubles while Hartman added a three-run homer and three RBIs. Chase Jones recorded two hits and Hayden Jones drove in two runs with his seventh-inning triple.
 
Jhett Long (0-2) took the loss while Giovanny Perez, Jaden Brown and Will Watts worked in relief. Watts tossed a hitless inning in the sixth.
 
Notables
- The Eagles concluded the season with a program-record 25 wins.
- USSU earned its first postseason victory earlier in the tournament against Central Penn.
- The Eagles made their first appearance at the USCAA Small College World Series in program history.
