Eagles Advance Behind Career Outing by Guth

DUBOIS, Pa. – The No. 4-seeded United States Sports University baseball team advanced in the USCAA Small College World Series after eliminating the No. 9 seed, Florida National, with a 7-3 win at Stern Field on Tuesday.

The Eagles used a dominant outing from Owen Guth and a pair of home runs from Evan Jacob to secure the postseason victory.

After both teams were held scoreless through two innings, USSU broke through in the third. Cory Parker singled before Jacob launched a two-run home run to left field. Dominick Hartman followed with a solo homer later in the inning to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Eagles added three more in the fourth. Napoleon Colston walked and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Parker before Jacob delivered his second two-run homer of the game to make it 5-0. Later in the inning, Andrew Garza lined an RBI single down the right-field line to push the advantage to 6-0.

Florida National answered with a two-run homer in the sixth, but USSU responded in the bottom half. Daniel Howell doubled, Chase Jones moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt and Hayden Jones delivered a sacrifice fly to extend the lead back to five runs.

Florida National added a run in the seventh and brought the tying run to the on-deck circle, but Guth induced a game-ending groundout to seal the victory.
