Eagles Sweep Mangos in Doubleheader

CLERMONT, Fla. – The United States Sports University softball team extended its win streak to five games after sweeping Wednesday's doubleheader against John Melvin – Winter Park, closing out a perfect week at THE Spring Games.
 
USSU 6, John Melvin – Winter Park 0
The Eagles (11-14) stole seven bases, marking a new program record.
 
USSU struck early with two runs in the first. Kassidy (Rowdy) New walked and came around to score on an error, and Ahlexus Lackey added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
 
The Eagles added two more in the second. Desiree Denmark scored on a passed ball and Irina Sanford followed with an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-0.
 
USSU pushed another run across in the third when Sydney Taylor scored on a passed ball, then added a final run in the sixth. New singled and later scored on an RBI single by Aralee Beene to make it 6-0.
 
Beene finished with a hit and two RBIs while Sanford added a double and an RBI. New scored twice and reached base twice as USSU totaled four hits and drew eight walks.
 
In the circle, Breana Barnes (5-6) tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits and not issuing a walk while matching the program record with eight strikeouts.
 
USSU 15, John Melvin – Winter Park 4 (5 Inn.)
USSU struck early with two runs in the first. New singled and scored on an error, then Lackey followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
 
After John Melvin answered with a run in the bottom half, the Eagles responded in the second. Sanford walked and New delivered a two-run home run to extend the lead to 4-1.
 
The Eagles added a run in the third on an RBI groundout by Victoria Nunez, but John Melvin answered with three runs to cut the lead to 5-4.
 
USSU broke the game open in the fourth with seven runs. Isabelle Calagaz highlighted the inning with a three-run triple, Morgan Courtney followed with a two-run double and the Eagles capitalized on multiple errors to push the lead to 12-4.
 
The Eagles added three more in the fifth. Bailey Moffat hit a pinch-hit double and Beene later scored after re-entering to run on an RBI double from Sheonte Barginere. Anna Claire Fleming drove in a run before Jaci Hagler brought home the final run on a groundout to cap the scoring.
 
New led the Eagles with two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs while scoring three times. Calagaz drove in three runs and Sanford added a hit, two runs scored and an RBI. Courtney finished with a double and two RBIs.
 
Ryleigh Merritt (5-5) earned the win, allowing four runs, one earned, over three innings. McKynzi Dawson tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

The Eagles run-ruled three of their four opponents throughout the week at THE Spring Games.
