Mobile Sweeps Doubleheader from Eagles

MOBILE, Ala. – The United States Sports University softball team was swept by Mobile in Tuesday's doubleheader at the UM Softball Field.
 
Game One | Mobile 4, USSU 1
USSU (0-7) battled throughout the opener and matched Mobile (5-3) with six hits.
 
After the Rams scored in the third, the Eagles answered in the fourth. Ahlexus Lackey doubled to right center and Emma Morgan, who pinch ran, later scored on an RBI groundout by Isabelle Calagaz to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Mobile regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Miah Simmons hit a two-run home run to right center. The Rams added an insurance run in the fifth on a bunt single by Lucy Spisto that plated Daryelin Rivas.
 
Hailey Vanbrimmer and Morgan Courtney each recorded two hits for the Eagles. Lackey added a double, and Desiree Denmark singled.
 
Mobile closed out the 4-1 win behind a complete-game effort from Riley Smith.
 
Breana Barnes (0-2) started and allowed three runs on four hits over four innings. McKynzi Dawson worked two innings in relief.
 
Game Two | Mobile 9, USSU 1 (6 Inn.)
USSU took an early lead in the second inning when Lackey singled and later scored on an RBI play by Calagaz.
 
Mobile answered with a run in the second on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, then took the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Diana Arcay.
 
The Rams broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Mobile drew nine walks and was hit by five pitches in the game, capitalizing on traffic on the bases to extend the lead to 9-1.
 
Vanbrimmer went 2-for-2 with a walk to lead the Eagles. Bailey Moffat added two hits, and Calagaz tallied an RBI as USSU recorded six hits.
 
Ryleigh Merritt (0-4) took the loss, allowing five runs over 4.1 innings. Dawson worked in relief.
 
Mobile's Katelynn Kempton (3-0) earned the win in relief.

Up Next
The Eagles head to Columbus, Georgia for the NFCA Leadoff Classic starting Feb. 27. The tournament runs through March 1.
