USSU Swept by Point in Doubleheader

WEST POINT, Ga. – The United States Sports University softball team was swept by Point in Thursday's doubleheader at West Point Park.
 
Game One | Point 6, USSU 5
USSU (0-5) took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame when Ahlexus Lackey doubled to left center to score Desiree Denmark. Point (5-3) answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a base-clearing double from Aubryn Sward.
 
The Eagles moved back in front in the fifth. Bailey Moffat was hit by a pitch and Emma Morgan entered as a pinch runner before Isabelle Calagaz doubled to center to bring Morgan home. Morgan Courtney followed with a two-run double to left center to give USSU a 4-3 advantage.
 
USSU added a run in the sixth when Annabeth (AB) Parrish singled to center to score Hailey Vanbrimmer, bringing the lead to 5-3.
 
Point responded in the bottom of the sixth. After a pair of runners reached, Alexa McCoy hit a three-run home run to left field to give the Skyhawks a 6-5 advantage.
 
Parrish finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Courtney, Calagaz, Lackey and Parrish each doubled. Irina Sanford added a triple.
 
Breana Barnes went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
 
Game Two | Point 3, USSU 1
The Skyhawks scored in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Anna McMahan and added two runs in the second on RBI doubles by McCoy and Chelsey Hogsed.
 
USSU cut the deficit to 3-1 in the third. After Sanford walked and Parrish reached on an error, Moffat singled to right field to score Parrish.
 
The Eagles were limited to three hits, one each from Moffat, Calagaz and Jaci Hagler, and left six runners on base.
 
Ryleigh Merritt pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Alyssa Burrows earned the win for Point after allowing one unearned run over seven innings.
