USSA Lose Pair to #14th Ranked William Carey

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Daphne, AL - For the second week in a row the United States Sports Academy's Softball team hosted a NAIA ranked opponent on Tuesday afternoon in Daphne.  William Carey defeated the Eagles in a doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 7-1.  Wiliam Carey came into today's contest with a record of 9-0 and ranked 14th in the country.

In game one, the Crusaders jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings of play.  The Eagles clawed back into the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  After one out, Heather Maxwell singled to right and later scored on an RBI triple by Kandace Burkett giving the Eagles their first run of the contest.  Sydney Taylor then knocked in pinch runner Ahlexus Lackey to cut the to 5-2 going into the last inning.  After a 1-2-3 top of the 7th, Dakota Edwards led off the bottom half with a home run to cut the lead to a pair.  Isabelle Calagaz then singled and after an out, Caitlin Tilton reached on an error to bring up the winning run.  Maxwell popped up to the third baseman on the infield fly rule for the second out and Emma Morgan was cut down at third base to end the game on a double play attempting to advance to third base.  USSA out-hit the Crusaders 7-6 in game one.

In game two, the Crusaders once again took an early lead with a pair runs in the top of the 1st inning.  USSA answered with a run in the bottom half of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Ryleigh Merritt that scored Morgan Courtney who ran for Taylor who had singled.  That was as close as the Eagles could get as William Carey scored three runs in the top of the 5th inning and added a pair in the top half of the 7th inning.  Merritt had a pair of hits to pace the Eagles who fall to 2-6 on the young season, while the Crusaders move to 11-0.

USSA will return to action this weekend in Tuscaloosa, Alabama taking on Central Baptist College and host Stillman College in a pair of games.
