Jackson, MS - The USSU Eagles men's soccer team traveled Millsaps College, coming away with a hard-fought 2–4 loss. The Majors jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half, capitalizing early and often on set-pieces and turnovers to put the Eagles on their heels.
USSU responded in the second half with increased urgency. In the 70th minute, sophomore
DeMarcus Hawkins finally broke through with a goal to bring the Eagles into the game. Then in the 87th minute, Hawkins struck again (assisted by
Nathan Webb) to cut the margin to 4-2 and give USSU a late opportunity to climb back.
Offensively, USSU actually outshot the home side 12 to 9, showing good intent. However, Millsaps held a 4 to 3 advantage in shots on goal, and their strong start proved too much for the Eagles to overcome.
USSU will finish out their season on the road at Tougaloo College on October 26th.
